Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is the surgical speciality that treats conditions, defects, injuries and aesthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face. The Irish Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is the professional representative body for the speciality of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Ireland.

Surgery

Oral & Maxillofacial (OMF) Surgeons specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face as well as the neck. Oral & Maxillofacial (OMF) surgery is unique in requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry, and is often seen as the bridge between medicine and dentistry.

Training

It is a requirement, in accordance with Article 8 (3)(b) of the European Specialist Medical Qualification Order 1995 that a Doctor must be both a registered medical practitioner and have a registrable dental degree in order to be eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register for the Speciality of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
